iOS App Gems

The App Store is filled with amazing apps that can help you create or consume videos, ebooks, websites and more. We are highlighting two apps that brings videos and digital magazines and newspapers to the iPad, iPhones, and iPods.

A couple of years ago we wondered what it would be like to go green and explored digital magazines (e-zines) with the Zinio app. Now with the latest iOS, 5.1 Apple introduced Newsstand app their digital hub for Magazines and Newspapers where you purchase single issues or subscriptions via the App Store.

Unlike Zinio, Newsstand automatically downloads new issues from your subscriptions in the background, so it won’t interrupt your reading. The Newsstand app uses dynamic icons that change when new issues of magazines and newspapers are delivered to your iOS device. Newsstand app is also integrated into the iOS Notification Center.

Air Video app can stream videos in almost any format to your iPhone, iPad and iPod. You don’t need to copy your videos to the device just to watch them. Stream videos over your local wifi network or they can be stream over the internet. Share disk folders and iTunes playlists.

Videos that can not by directly played by iOS can be easily converted. The Free Air Video Server can be downloaded here. Air Video Server for OS X requires OS X Leopard version 10.5.6 or newer. Air Video Server for Windows requires Windows XP, Vista or 7.

Taking Wing to The Red King

April 6, 2012 2 comments

After our 144 hour Trek through Star Trek TNG’s seven television seasons and four motion pictures we were feeling a little lost without the 24th century’s characters, cultures, and adventures. We tried watching the “other” Star Trek franchises but nothing filled the void left by the Enterprise and her crew.

Image our surprise when we found a Star Trek book series that picks up right after the events in the last TNG motion picture Star Trek Nemesis. However, the series does not follow Captain Picard and the Enterprise but the adventures of newly made Captain William T Riker and his new Luna Class Starship, USS Titan.

USS Titan is the first Starship in the Federation history to have a 75% non-humanoid crew. Captain Riker is not the only familiar face in the new series, Commander Tori — now married to Riker — is the Diplomatic Officer and Lt Commander Tuvok from USS Voyager fame is the second-in-command aboard Titan.

Authors Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels takes the reins of this two-part overzealous adventure starting with Star Trek Titan: Taking Wing. Their is a power vacuum created at the end of Star Trek Nemesis in the Romulan Star Empire. To restore order to this region of space, the Federation assigns the USS Titan to set up power-sharing talks among the Romulan factions. With no other help available, Captain Riker and the Titan’s crew become the last hope to prevent the Romulan Empire from falling into chaos.

In the 2nd part of Titan’s first voyage: The Red King; The crew of USS Titan are investigating the disappearance of a secret Romulan fleet when they are unwittingly propelled into another galaxy, where they encounter an offshoot race of humans. Meanwhile, an unexplained phenomenon apparently altering the space-time continuum is discovered.

We enjoyed the characters and sub-plots of the first two Titan books but this story could and should have been told in one book not two. We do recommend reading Taking Wing if you are interested in the events that follow the last TNG motion picture Nemesis and reading the Memory Beta synopsis of The Red King.

Free Yourself from the Hidden Internet

Behind every webpage there is a hidden internet that a normal user never views. This hidden internet is home to all the Advertising Networks, and other information gathering tools that companies use to track people that visit their websites.

This is how Twitter, Google, Facebook and many other popular websites make money selling your private information. If you are like us and privacy on the webpages you visit and the products you buy online is a major concern; look no further than Ghostery, a free Web Browsers extension/plug-in. Ghostery lists all the hidden information gathering tools and blocks them from gathering and tracking your online information.

Ghostery not only lets you block these hidden tools but gives you a chance to learn more about each company it identifies and how they describe themselves, a link to their privacy policies, and more. Ghostery works with all the popular Web Browsers: FirefoxChromeSafari, Opera and Internet Explorer.

When the First Community Church of Philadelphia hired Reverend Doctor Rueben Gregory as their Minister no one, including Deacon Ernest J Frye, realized how much their lives would change with Reverend Gregory leading their flock. Besides Deacon Frye, and Reverend Gregory the Church Board consists of eighty-nine year old Church Treasurer Rolly Forbes and the gossipy Hetebrink sisters, Amelia and Cassietta. Reverend Gregory was the right choice for The First Community Church because he balanced the overbearing Deacon Frye against the rest of the Board to bring the Gospel, daycare centers, after-school programs and more to their Philadelphia community.

When Reverend Gregory saw Deacon Frye’s daughter, Thelma for the first time it was love at first sight — at least for Thelma! Thelma, then a thirty-six year old single woman living with her father, started a five year journey to get her man and be Mrs. Reverend Doctor Rueben Gregory! Follow Thelma’s journey as she wins over Reverend Gregory and becomes a wife and mother in the televison show; Amen it ran for five years from 1987 to 1991 on NBC.

Amen
is a heart-warming comedy that featured an almost-entirely black cast like others historical television shows; The Cosby Show, A Different World, and 227. Ten years after Sherman Hemsley moved on up as George Jefferson, Hemsley took on the role of Deacon Ernest J Frye, a shady lawyer/Judge who is a Deacon of his church and father to Thelma Frye, played by sassy actress Anna Maria Horsford. Most of the episodes revolved around Deacon Frye serving the First Community Church and Thelma’s plans to marry Reverend Gregory, played by wonderful actor Clifton Davis. Roz Ryan and Barbara Montgomery as the Hetebrink sisters lend their heavenly voices to their roles which makes the Church Choir scenes absolutely amazing. Jester Hairston as the feisty senior citizen, Rolly Forbes, steals every scene he was featured. In the last season Bumper Robinson shows up as Clarence “the so fine”, a young man Deacon Frye mentors.  As with most sitcoms Amen had its fair share of guest stars, Halle Barry, Cuba Gooding Jr and James Brown just to name a few.

For us the true star of the show was Anna Maria Horsford as Thelma Frye Gregory. Anna brought such life to this “ugly duckling” character that she eclipsed the show’s billed star, Sherman Hemsley. Anna Maria Horsford career continued after Amen, showing up in television and film: Reed Between the Lines, Everybody Hates Chris, Minority Report, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Friday and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are a few of our favorites. Unfortunately Amen is not available on DVD or VHS as of this post but maybe you can catch it on Nick at Nite or the ONE Channel.
